CANCUN, Mexico — A prominent Mexican businessman accused of luring poor girls to his home in Cancun has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for child pornography.

A legal U.S. resident, Jean Succar Kuri had fled to the U.S. during the investigation against him but was extradited in 2004.

A federal judge in the Mexican resort city announced its verdict in a statement Wednesday but gave no details on the evidence against him.

Succar had denied the charges.

The case gained notoriety following the arrest of a Mexican journalist who wrote a book implicating politicians and businessmen in Cancun sex scandals. Audio tapes were released apparently featuring a former state governor and another businessman plotting to jail the journalist.
