MOSCOW (AP) _ Hundreds of Russian nationalists, some
wearing medieval-style helmets and chain mail, shouted
“Glory to Russia” as they marched through Moscow on
Tuesday in celebration of a new national holiday. Some 1,500 people took part in the rally to celebrate National Unity Day, a holiday created in 2005 to replace the traditional celebration of the 1917 Bolshevik rise to power. It celebrates a 17th century military victory.
Anti-immigrant groups and more extreme nationalists have also embraced the holiday as their own, but were not allowed to hold a separate march. Police say they detained more than 400 people trying to defy the ban.
