The second of 33 workers trapped for more than two months deep in a Chilean mine reached the surface early on Wednesday morning in a specially-made rescue capsule, leaving 31 to be rescued in the hours ahead.

The first miner chosen by officials to be brought to the surface, Florencio Avalos, was a 31-year-old father of two who was second-in-charge of the group.
