Kharkiv - The prosecution does not see grounds for closing a criminal case against former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on irregularities in the operations of Unified Energy Systems of Ukraine (UESU).

“We believe that there are no grounds for suspending and closing the criminal case, especially considering that these processes are considered at a certain stage of the judicial proceedings, and since we have not yet started the judicial proceedings, we have not yet addressed these issues,” prosecutor Maryna Kapinos told journalists on Friday in commenting on Tymoshenko’s and her defense team’s request that her criminal prosecution be dropped.

“We see that the defendant does not want to appear at the courtroom and give her explanations to the court,” she said.

Kapinos declined to comment on Tymoshenko’s defendant Serhiy Vlasenko’s statement that the indictment presented against the ex-prime minister is groundless and that the charges that have been brought against her can be brought only against the company’s executives, while Tymoshenko was in fact a parliamentarian at the time.

“I will be able to comment on issues concerning the indictment only after the arguments are examined and assessed in court,” Kapinos said.
