Batkivschyna Party leader Yulia Tymoshenko has said that it is necessary to immediately impose martial law in eastern Ukraine due to external aggression.

“We need to make three primary steps. The first is to immediately impose martial law in Donetsk and Luhansk regions. This will greatly strengthen our defense system and coordination of our actions,” she told reporters in Kyiv on Thursday, Aug. 28.

In addition, Tymoshenko said that it was necessary to immediately set the headquarters of the commander-in-chief and that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko should take over all levers of management of the country’s defense.

“And thirdly, it is necessary to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada and approve the imposition of martial law in Donetsk and Luhansk regions,” she said.

She said that the Ukrainian parliament should appeal to the governments and peoples of the world to provide effective military assistance to Ukraine.

“We can no longer call everything that is happening in eastern Ukraine as a terrorist attack by some unknown separatists. We must say honestly that Russia has launched a war against Ukraine,” Tymoshenko said.

She also said that her team, in the issue of national defense, would “stand together with the president and the entire Ukrainian authorities.”
