The management of the Kachanivska Penal Colony has rejected requests by former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko for permission to hold a meeting with opposition politicians Arseniy Yatseniuk, Oleksandr Turchynov, and Hryhoriy Nemyria on Friday.

“Convict Tymoshenko asked the management of the Kachanivska Penal Colony of Kharkiv region (No. 54) if she could hold a meeting with Yatseniuk, Turchyunov, and Nemyria on September 28. The management of the establishment rejected the request, informed Tymoshenko about this, and explained the reasons for such a decision, referring to the law,” reads a statement of the State Penitentiary Service of Ukraine.

The penitentiary service noted that, according to current legislation, meetings with convicts that are undergoing treatment at hospitals should be suspended for the period of his or her hospitalization. Only lawyers and doctors can be admitted to such convicts.

In addition, the penitentiary service recalled that the German doctors from the Charite Clinic said that a significant number of meetings may negatively influence the rehabilitation process of Tymoshenko. Due to this fact, doctors recommended that Tymoshenko limit the number of her meetings during her hospitalization and focus on the rehabilitation process.

“The administration of the Kachanivska Penal Colony (No. 54) allows Tymoshenko to meet with her defense lawyers and doctors without restrictions in order to provide her with medical and legal assistance,” reads the statement.

The penitentiary service also said that during the period of the ex-premier’s hospitalization at Central Clinical Hospital of Kharkiv No. 5 [since May 9, 2012], she held more than 180 meetings with European parliamentarians, members of diplomatic missions and foreign legal experts, politicians, and certain citizens.
