Metal music festival

Various rock and metal bands will perform during the Carpathian Alliance Metal Festival on July 29-30 in Kyiv. The festival was originally held in Carpathian Mountains, but moved this year to capital’s Druzhby Narodiv Park. Apart from music performances, actors in costume will also reproduce a tournament of knights from the Middle Ages. A three-day ticket to the festival costs Hr 600, camping is Hr 120 for all days.

Blues concert

Portuguese blues musician Messias will perform famous blues hits and his own songs from his album “No More Than Me” in Kyiv’s Caribbean Club on Aug. 12.

‘Race’ (movie screening)

“Race” is a biopic that tells the story of James Cleveland “Jesse” Owens, the famous Afro-American track and field athlete who won gold at the Olympic Games in Germany in 1936, during the dictatorship of Adolf Hitler. Owen’s victory challenged Hitler’s myth of Aryan supremacy. The movie will be screened in English with Ukrainian subtitles.

‘The Neon Demon’ (movie screening)

This horror movie by Danish director Winding Refn tells the story of 16-year-old model Jesse (played by Elle Fanning) who moves to Los Angeles and succeeds in her profession. She soon becomes a target for her rivals, who are ready to do anything to get her out of the fashion world. The movie will be screened in English with Ukrainian subtitles.

Street Food Festival

This year’s street food festival, held at the Platforma Art Factory on Aug. 12-14, will focus on Asian cuisine. Festival visitors will be able to sample various Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian dishes, listen to lectures on urban geography, and watch break dancing and beatbox competitions.

Z-Games Festival

Sport professionals and those who want to try out extreme sport activities like skateboarding, bouldering (climbing, without the use of ropes or other equipment) and slacklining (balancing on a rope stretched loosely between two anchors) should be interested in the Z-Games festival of music and sport. The festival used to be held in Ukraine’s Crimea, but since that territory’s annexation by Russia in 2014, the event has moved to Zatoka, in Odesa Oblast. The festival schedule includes dance battles, various master classes on extreme sports, and music sets by world famous DJs like Jamie Jones and Paul Oakenfold. Camping plots are available for Hr 200-300. Entry tickets cost Hr 1,290 if you buy before the end of July. To get to the festival, take a train or plane from Kyiv to Odesa and then a bus or train to Lymanska station.
