You're reading: Food Critic: Another pay for time cafe opens up in Kyiv

The idea of a creative space where you pay only for the time spend there seems to be getting more and more popular in Ukraine. Freud House café – the fourth pay for time place opened up in Kyiv, Kostyntynivska Street at Podil, three days ago. However it seems like even being not the first won’t make the owners lose.

Fifteen
minutes before the closing time, 11 p.m., there are still up to a dozen
visitors in Freud’s House six rooms.

All the
rooms except for one are decorated with Sigmund Freud, legendary neurologist,
portraits starting from the one on the first floor – with wooden tabels and different colored lamps.

There is also
a Freud’s cabinet, a rather small room with working desks and a couple of
armchairs; a leaving room, the biggest one where all the concerts take place,
with small round tables and purple chairs and armchairs around them; a kitchen
where one can get free tea, coffee, cappuccino, some cookies and sweets; and a
library with square tables all divided by ceiling high book shelves, with up to
hundred books all brought by the visitors during the three days.

The library
works like a book crossing space, the Freud’s House hosts say.  One can take a book to read and bring books
to leave in the Freud’s library. As of now the choice is pretty good and quite
wide.  Book lovers can find there some John
Robert Fowles, famous English post-modernism novelist, novels in Russian, the
collection of detective fiction by Russian writer of Georgian origin Borys
Akunin, some legendary works by Jean Paul Sartre and even some English language
literature for the foreign guests.

There is even a so called “gym” organized by
Freud adepts. You can’t of course run or lift weights there, but darts and
inside basketball can definitely be enjoyed. For those who are not big sports
fans, but still want to choose a small bright-colored room there is lots of
soccer ball-shaped hassocks where one can sit for tea or just a chat with
friends. The café also has a mailbox where the visitors can leave their
correspondents that will be brought to the closets Post Office by Freud’s House
hosts.

Even though the choice of the board games,
that are must to have in pay for time places, is still poor and not much
cookies and sweets offered the show bill is full of upcoming events. Autograph
sessions and book presentations of the famous writers, live music concerts,
movie nights and even some quests are on the list of upcoming events in the
Freud’s house.

But what makes the Freud’s variant of pay for
time café different and worth to stop by is the price. One should pay Hr 36 for
the first hour and the fee reduces with every next one up to the fourth hour
with is already free just as every next after it. So the maximum one can pay is
Hr 72, hosts explain.
