You're reading: Arsenale 2012

Kyiv is getting ambitious about its art scene, and the first ever Arsenale exhibit is set to prove it. The huge contemporary art exhibition of modern Ukrainian art will open in Mystetsky Arsenal, the national art complex housed by the former arms factory right across the road from Pechersk Lavra.

The exhibition, which kicks off on May 23, has a reference in its name to the Venice Biennale, the biggest and most prestigious art show in the world that takes place every other year. Ukraine’s exhibit will also be bi-annual.
This year’s theme is “Best Times, Worst Times – The Rebirth of Apocalypse in Contemporary Art.” It’s all about life in the modern world, the organizers say.
Apart from the exhibition, the organizers hope to see plenty of discussions around art works and meetings with artists, as well as lectures on contemporary art by local and foreign art critics.
