You're reading: Modern icons

Have you ever imagined what Jesus would look like if he were Ukrainian?

Religious artist Oleksandr Ohapkin can help you paint the picture.

Taking inspiration from traditional Byzantine iconography but giving it a new twist, Ohapkin creates icons with a distinctive Ukrainian flavor.

Familiar saints appear in gentle pastels and traditional Ukrainian clothing, with backgrounds adorned with flowers. Even the figures appear to have recognizably Slavic features.

Art historians have called Ohapkin’s modern icons “religious poetry in color,” inspiring the mood of reverence and peace.
