You're reading: Budapest Gypsy Symphony Orchestra

When Hungary’s gypsy violin virtuoso Sandor Jaroka died, dozens of Hungarian gypsy musicians came to honor the maestro.

After the funeral the musicians spontaneously started playing their violins. This impromptu concert was the beginning of a one-of-a-kind Gypsy Symphony Orchestra now known across the world as “One hundred gypsy violins.”

Their repertoire comprises everything from hit classical masterpieces to ethnic gypsy music.

Donning national clothing, musicians play with no scores and have no permanent conductor, rotating that role among the lead musicians.

Apart from 50 violins, there are 10 alto soloists, 10 cellos, 8 basses, 4 cymbals and 10 clarinets.
