Ukraine is a large country and its regions are not very interconnected by transport routes, traditions of people movement, economic and cultural ties. Moreover, different Ukrainian regions have formed as part of different empires and have their own ethnic, linguistic, religious, cultural differences, and the Ukrainian political class has long used inter-regional differences to obtain parliamentary seats or win presidential positions, thus nurturing differences and translating them into an inter-regional confrontation.
