On Jan. 14, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) made its intermediary decision in the case of Ukraine against Russia regarding human rights violations in the occupied Crimea. The court decided that Russia had indeed carried out effective control over Crimea since Feb. 27, 2014, before the local referendum, which means the court de-facto recognized the occupation of the peninsula by force. The court also ruled that the majority of Ukrainian allegations fall under the court’s jurisdiction. Violations of human rights as committed by the Russians will further be considered and the final decision will be made regarding each allegation.
