In view of this it is worth analysing relevant Ukrainian problems and geopolitical changes which could be determined by Ukraine‘s membership in the EU. Active discussions on the Association Agreement demonstrate that Ukraine is important for the European Union and, despite some Kiev‘s regress, the EU does not want to completely alienate the country.  

But Russia is also trying to have Kiev in the zone of its influence, and Moscow actively escalates the issues of energy. At the end of January Russian corporation Gazprombilled Ukraine on 7 billion dollars for contract non-performance on gas purchases: in 2012 Ukraine bought only 33 billion cubic meters of gas instead of 52 billion anticipated in the agreement. Kiev doesn’t seem to be willing to fulfil Gazprom‘s requirements and this  might mean the beginning of a new „gas war“.
