Ukrainian scientists found oil and gas in Antarctica

On geoelectric sounding
results in 2012, Ukrainian scientists discovered found an oil-and-gas province
located near Ukrainian Antarctic station Academician Vernadsky in West
Antarctica. The total area of oil deposits is about 900 square kilometers.
The scientists also discovered anomalous zones of hydrated gas accumulation.
According to the information real deposits of gas-hydrates might be 25-30%
higher than previous figures; that is why the area can be referred to one of
the most promising for further research of hydrated gas accumulation. In order
to strengthen Ukraine’s presence in Antarctica it is planned to expand research
area, establish a network of seasonal bases and construct a new year-round
operation station in another part of the Antarctic region.
