Mykolaiv schoolboy
invents electronic guide for the blind

Ivan Seleznev, a 16-year
old pupil from Mykolaiv, has invented a device that helps the blind
to move indoors and outdoors. Shaped like gloves, his invention
detects barriers and and emits a vibrating signal. It is easy to use
and cheap to produce. American scientists called Seleznev’s invention
“a breakthrough in the world of special equipment for the blind.”
It also won him a third place in the World Competition on Scientific
and Technological Art, held in the USA, amid some 1,500 young
inventors from around the world.

Volunteers revive a
village in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast

On July 5-7, 2013, there
will be an official opening of the village 100PUDIVKA (formerly,
called Rakove village) located in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. 100PUDIVKA
is the largest social youth project in Eastern Ukraine: Last year
more than 200 volunteers from Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Kherson,
Kyiv, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Simferopol, Zhytomyr and Ivano-Frankivsk
decided to revive a desolate village. They painted all houses in
Ukrainian style, built new buildings out of environmentally friendly
materials, and equipped sports facilities.

After the opening, the
village will serve as a platform for festivals on weekends, and to
host dancing, sports, music and social camps on week days.

A Ukrainian girl
entered TOP-4 worldwide young opera singers list

Olena Tokar’s
performance at the world’s most prestigious competition for young
opera singers, BBC Cardiff Singer, put the 26-year old among the top
four performers. The Ukrainian has experienced a bright career
abroad, working with the Leipzig Opera, participating in the Young
Singers Project at the Salzburg Festival, and winnng the
international music competitions ARD (Munich) and Lortzing (Leipzig).
She was also a finalist at the Francisco Vinyasa National Singer
Contest (Barcelona).

BBC Cardiff Singer is
held every two years in Cardiff and gathers about 1,000 contestants.

Local authorities of
Kharkiv Oblast and the state of Minnesota will exchange
their
experiences on territorial
development

In 2014 the local
governments of Kharkiv Oblast and the state of Minnesota will
exchange experience on strategic territorial development. The
partnership exchange program was recently presented in Kharkiv by
Svitlana Salamatova, chairman of the NGO ICA-Ukraine and coordinator
of the Ukraine-Minnesota project. A government delegation from
Minnesota is expected to come to Kharkiv in May, 2014, with the
Ukrainian delegation making a the return visit in September. There
are also hopes this will build economic ties between the regions, and
spur investments.

Ukrainian gains
popularity among Russian students

Every year the number of
students at Russian higher educational institutions who chose to
learn Ukrainian is growing. At present, the language is taught at
about 10 Russian universities, with Belgorod University even boasting
a full Ukrainian department, the only one operating on Russian
territory. About 3 thousand students study there.
