Peace Corps volunteers are implementing a mobile application on consumer protection in Melitopol of Zaporizhia Oblast.

Ukraine is first in Eastern
Europe testing mobile application on consumer protection

The Peace
Corps volunteers William Toerpe and Logan Brennan, living in Melitopol of Zaporizhia Oblast) are
developing a mobile smart phone application that would allow local residents to
publicly report hazardous issues to the local government (such as unsafe
black-market consumer goods and infrastructure problems, like potholes and
broken streetlights). Features of this application would include the ability to
upload photos of the dangerous issue, create a location place marker, vote and
prioritize concerns/complaints, see where complaints are located on the city map,
and comment. Local authorities of Melitopol are open to this idea implementation
and want to participate. After the app beta testing in Melitopol and Zaporizhia
the guys are planning to propose the mobile smartphone app to other cities of
Ukraine.

Toerpe said
the application would be the first of its kind to incorporate a consumer
protection aspect and the first of its kind in Eastern Europe. More about the application idea can be read here: http://innovationchallenge.peacecorps.gov/
