A Russian court sentenced civic journalist and Crimean Solidarity Coordinator Server Mustafayev to 14 years’ imprisonment on Sept. 16. His sentence and those of seven other Crimean Solidarity civic journalists and activists were read out without a single western diplomat, journalist or representative of international human rights NGOs present. Their absence was baffling since Mustafayev is an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience and five of the men are civic journalists. It also sent a very dangerous message to Russia which has since arrested and / or brought criminal charges against very many other Crimean Tatar civic journalists and activists.
