You're reading: How to handle Ukraine

In the below Q&A style analysis, Olga Shumylo-Tapiola argues that Ukraine is now at a crossroad and must choose whether to move closer toward the EU or continue on its current path. While Yanukovych expects the EU to back down, the EU should not be afraid of alienating Kyiv — a move toward Moscow is not in Ukraine’s interest.

Olga Shumylo-Tapiola is a visiting scholar at Carnegie Europe in Brussels, where her research focuses on EU and Russian policy toward Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus. This analysis was originally published on Carnegie Europe’s website. In 2008 Shumylo-Tapiola served in the Ukrainian government, advising the deputy prime minister on European integration. Between 2002 and 2004 she served as a seconded expert, advising the Ukrainian Ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs on EU-Ukraine relations.

How serious is Ukraine’s leadership about further integration with the EU?
