After weeks of warnings over imprisoned ex-Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Brussels postponed a visit by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych yesterday, saying that it would be better to wait for a more suitable moment in relations between Europe and Ukraine. EU accession has long been a dream for a country on the periphery of Europe, but it seems little more than a pipe dream now with relations at their lowest point in years, much to Russia’s delight. As doors close to the West, Ukraine will likely drift East, where Russia is waiting with open arms and a Customs Union that already includes economic powerhouses like Kazakhstan and Belarus.
