Tatyana Chub: Christening democracy with blood and fire
If Ukrainians thought that 25 people dead was bad and thought Tuesday was bloody, they did not know what Thursday would bring. Maidan managed to survive two nights of special forces troops assaulting the protesters and was entering Thursday in a truce agreement with the authorities. Apparently a false one. According to Ukrainska Pravda website which sited maids from the Ukraina hotel (situated right above the Independence Square, i.e. Maidan Nezalezhnosti) on Wednesday a Party of Regions member Nestor Shufrich checked in a Russian military group, possibly snipers. In twenty four hours unidentified snipers from two locations around Maidan (specifically from hotel Ukraina) wounded over 500 protesters and 77 people were shot dead according to official medical reports. Sniper bullets were removed from the bodies and documented. Heartbreaking photos, videos and personal accounts of murdered students, family men and even scientists and cultural figures filled up Ukrainians’ Facebook friend feeds and internet media.
