Narodnyi Dim Ukraina is a unique arts and crafts shop, and the first of its kind in the heart of Kyiv. Its 150 square meters are filled with exclusive souvenirs, ceramics, books, icons, Ukrainian traditional clothing and many other items representing national culture – most of them handmade by the finest craftsmen. Its staff is enormously happy to see a growing number of young people becoming interested in Ukrainian history and traditions, and would like to introduce Ukraine’s rich culture to others around the world.
Embroidered shirt, or vyshyvanka
It’s hard to imagine something more Ukrainian than the vyshyvanka — the traditional embroidered shirt that has recently become a fashion trend worldwide. It is a truly Ukrainian clothing element, and the most popular item in the store. Sometimes an entire family comes in to choose embroidered shirts for each family member, down to the very youngest one. Vyshyvanka styles aren’t limited to shirts and T-shirts. There are also exquisite and stylish dresses with beautiful embellishments and patterns that highlight the beauty, femininity, and perfect taste of the lucky woman who wears one of them. The men’s embroidered shirts also look very stylish, and any toddler seen wearing a small embroidered shirt always draws admiration.
Petrykivka Painting
This traditional decorative painting style, originating in Dnipropetrovsk region, is so unique, it was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013. It’s notable for its colorful embellishments featuring flowers, berries, and bird – all of which have deep universal symbolism – and is applied to plates, cutlery, and vases. The shop features an exclusive selection of icons and books to appeal to true art lovers, made by a devoted team of creators who are great fans of Ukraine and its rich, ancient history. The icons are produced using a method called galvanoplasty, with the use of silver and gold coatings, and are considered a very special and valuable gift. Many of the books presented here are issued in limited editions, and you won’t find some of them even in Ukraine’s largest book archives.
