You're reading: Construction ministry permits designing LED lighting in buildings

The Regional Development, Construction, Housing and Utilities Economy Ministry of Ukraine has amended the national construction standards permitting the use of LED lighting in buildings being designed.

“Until recently, the construction standards on lighting did not even foresee the possibility of using LEDs, which have been widely used for ten years, if not more. Therefore, we regulated the use of this lighting on an equal basis with others,” the press service of Deputy Minister Lev Partskhaladze reported, citing him as saying.

According to him, about 10-20 percent of the total energy consumption in homes accounts for lighting, while the use of LEDs will contribute to energy saving.

The possibility of using photo-luminescent safety signs in the event of evacuation from the building is also outlined in the new standard, the press service said.

The requirement applies to the design of lighting of premises in residential buildings, civil, industrial buildings and structures, on the territories of industrial and agricultural enterprises, outdoor lighting of populated areas, including streets, roads, parks, beaches, building fronts, areas around houses, playgrounds and other places.

The national construction standard was developed by the specialists of KyivPromElektroProekt LLC to replace the requirement being in force since 2006. The new standard entered into force on February 28, 2019.
