Rinat Akhmetov, Ukraine’s wealthiest oligarch, has initiated an appeal of a global freeze on $820m of his assets imposed last week by a Nicosia court in connection with a dispute with a rival over Ukrtelecom, the country’s largest fixed line telecoms operator.

SCM, the holding company for a diversified portfolio of Mr Akhmetov’s assets valued by Forbes last year at $4.6bn, told the Financial Times that group companies and legal executives were “represented in court today in Cyprus and strongly objected to the order.”
