You're reading: French sports retailer Decathlon opens first store in Kyiv

The world’s largest sports goods retailer Decathlon officially opened its first store in Kyiv on March 23, 2019.

The global French sports retailer had announced that it was entering the Ukrainian market back in September 2018. Their first store in Kyiv is located on Stepana Bandery Avenue, at the capital’s Retail Park Petrivka, taking up floor space of 2,500 square-meters.

It already offers sports equipment and sportswear for 70 kinds of sports, including diving, archery, tennis and football. Apart from that, Decathlon also owns over 20 sports goods brands.

“We are all delighted sportspeople who have turned our passion into our job, which is to make sports accessible for the many,” Decathlon’s official Facebook page reads.

Decathlon was founded in 1976 by French businessman Michel Leclercq. Nowadays, the chain includes 1510 stores present in 49 countries all over the world, as of December 2018.

Prior to that, another huge European retailer, the Swedish retailer of furniture, home decor and kitchen appliances IKEA announced on Sept. 12, 2018, that it will enter Ukraine’s market with the first store opened in Kyiv in 2019.
