Gazprom is preparing to file an international arbitration claim over a fine of Hr 172 billion ($6.6 billion) imposed by the Ukrainian Antimonopoly Committee.

The Russian gas giant said in a statement that reports that Ukraine was seeking to recover funds from Gazprom were indicative of the “continuation of attempts to illegally seize Gazprom property under the pretext of fulfilling a decision by the Ukrainian Antimonopoly Committee in 2016 to impose a fine.”

“Gazprom does not recognize the fine as lawful and considers this action by Ukraine to be an infringement of its rights, including those guaranteed by the Russian-Ukrainian inter-governmental agreement of November 27, 1998, to encourage and safeguard investments,” the company said.

“Gazprom has already notified Ukraine of violation by the Ukrainian side of commitments to safeguard investments and is preparing an international arbitration lawsuit,” Gazprom said.
