You're reading: Ukraine reduces natural gas imports by 68.8 percent in January

Ukraine in January reduced imports of natural gas by 68.8 percent, or by 553.8 million cubic meters (mcm) compared to the same month of 2018, to 247.7 mcm, according to an update from JSC Ukrtransgaz.

In particular, natural gas shipments from Slovakia in January totaled 122.7 mcm (79.4 percent down from January 2018), those from Hungary were 84.9 mcm (14.9 percent down), and deliveries from Poland stood at 40.2 mcm (61.8percent down), according to Interfax-Ukraine’s own estimates.

At the same time, natural gas imports in January compared to January 2017 (1.453 billion cubic meters, or bcm), fell by 83.1 percent.

As reported, Ukraine has not imported natural gas under a contract with Russia’s PJSC Gazprom for more than three years (since Nov. 26, 2015), buying gas exclusively on its western border.

Ukraine in 2018 reduced imports of natural gas by 24.6 percent (by 3.460 bcm) as compared with 2017, to 10.590 bcm. In particular, gas shipments from Slovakia last year totaled 6.459 bcm (34.8 percent down from 2017), Hungary 3.441 bcm (21.4 percent up from 2017), and Poland 690.1 mcm (47.1 percent down from 2017).
