JSC Ukrzaliznytsia in January-June 2019 overhauled 18 passenger wagons and plans to increase their number to 50, the company has said on its website.

Among the renewed cars are four second-class cars, three suit cars, the rest are compartment cars. These cars are already used on routes as part of the first-class branded trains.

“After a major overhaul, we actually get a new car. Last year, 118 cars were upgraded. They proved to be good in operation. The cost of upgrading one car is Hr 12-13 million. This is twice as cheap as purchasing a new one and extends the operation of rolling stock by half of its life cycle, namely by 14 years,” Ukrzaliznytsia Board Chairman Yevhen Kravtsov said, being quoted in the report.

According to him, in this way, the company also implements an import substitution program, since almost all of the components used in the overhaul are made by Ukrainian companies.

In the process of modernization, the interior of the car changes, windows, shelves, equipment are replaced; air conditioning systems and vacuum toilet complexes are installed.

According to Ukrzaliznytsia, now 2,864 cars are involved in passenger transportation, their average age is 32 years with the standard age of 28 years.
