The gas transport system should remain Ukraine's property and a gas consortium can be created only with the participation of European consumers, Regions Party MP Inna Bohoslovska has said.

"The absolute majority in the Regions Party and the government proceed from the fact that Ukraine’s gas transport system should remain the property of Ukraine," she said at a press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Monday.

"Therefore, any legislation that will be passed in the sphere of the use of the GTS will most likely be based on this," she said.

At the same time, Bohoslovska noted that the previous government had passed a law "banning the touching of" the GTS and that as a result, there will be two gas pipelines around Ukraine – Nord Stream and South Stream.

In her opinion, there is a real threat that the Ukrainian GTS will not be in demand, which would entail huge losses to the country’s state budget and, accordingly, affect every Ukrainian family.

"Of course, we should have a consortium to manage the GTS," Bohoslovska said.

"We are confident that when the formula of the consortium is clear, then on its basis, Ukraine should change this senseless law, which does not allow anything to be done with the GTS," she said.

However, she noted that Russia insisted on the formula for the creation of the consortium under the 2+1 formula, i.e. on a fifty-fifty basis between Russia and Ukraine, and after that each party would send its part of the share to a third party.
