The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is investigating the office of UniCredit Bank, PJSC Ukrsotsbank in Kyiv, over attempts to finance terrorism by legal and business entities, however the bank itself is not suspected of any wrongdoing, SBU spokeswoman Olena Hitlianska has said.

“We confirm that as a part of the criminal case, which is being investigating by the SBU office in Kyiv and Kyiv region, under Part 3 of the Article 285 of the Criminal Code [on financing terrorism], definite investigative actions have been carried at this bank establishment,” Hitlianska told Interfax-Ukraine on May 25.

She said the investigation is being carried “to freeze possible financial operations meant for financing of terrorist organizations of Luhansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic.”

“The procedural actions are carried [out] regarding individual and legal entities, who were using accounts in this bank to finance terrorism,” she added.
