Ukraine threshed 36.5 million tonnes of grain by Sept 19, 2011, which is 12% up on 2010, according to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry.

According to a report, grain and leguminous crops were harvested from 11.9 million hectares, or 77% of the area forecast.

The average yield of these crops in the country was 30.8 centners per hectare, compared to 25.6 centners per hectare last year.

Farmers threshed 1.3 million tonnes of maize from 260,000 hectares (7% of the target). Its average yield is 50.4 centners per hectare (39.3 centners per hectare in 2010).

Buckwheat was harvested from 230,000 hectares (76% of the target).

Its harvest was 260,000 tonnes, with the average yield being 11.2 centners per hectare against 8.4 centners per hectare last year.

Millet was gathered from 400,000 hectares (85% of the target), the harvest was 270,000 tonnes of millet with the average yield being 19.5 centners per hectare (15.2 centners per hectare in 2010).

Farmers are still harvesting industrial crops. In particular, as of September 19, 2011, they threshed 3.4 million tonnes of sunflower seeds from 1.9 million hectares (42% of the target).

Their average yield is 17.9 centners per hectare, against 15.6 centners per hectare last year.

Soybeans were gathered from 240,000 hectares (21% of the target), 460,000 tonnes of soybeans were harvested with an average yield being 19.4 centners per hectare (13.9 centners per hectare in 2010).

As of Sept19, 2011, farmers also harvested 3.2 million tonnes of sugar beets from 89,000 hectares.

The average yield was 355 centners per hectare against 307 centners per hectare in 2010.

The agriculture ministry predicts that the yield of grain in Ukraine in 2011 will exceed 50 million tonnes.

Last year Ukraine harvested 39.3 million tonnes of grain.
