Ukraine had threshed 40.8 million tonnes of grain as of Oct. 3, 2011, which is 14.5% up on 2010, according to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry.

According to a ministry report, grain and leguminous crops were harvested from 12.7 million hectares, or 79% of the area forecast.

The average yield of these crops in the country was 31.4 centners per hectare, compared to 26.1 centners per hectare last year, or 82% of the forecast. The average yield is 32.1 centners per hectare compared to 26.5 centners per hectare last year.

Farmers threshed 5.5 million tonnes of maize from 1.02 million hectares (28% of the target). Its average yield is 54.1 centners per hectare (41.8 centners per hectare in 2010).

Buckwheat was harvested from 260,000 hectares (87% of the target). Its harvest was 290,000 tonnes, with the average yield being 11.1 centners per hectare against 8.3 centners per hectare last year.

Millet was gathered from 150,000 hectares (92% of the target): the harvest was 290,000 tonnes of millet with the average yield being 19.1 centners per hectare (15.2 centners per hectare in 2010).

Farmers are still harvesting industrial crops. In particular, as of October 3, 2011, they threshed 6.75 million tonnes of sunflower seeds from 3.7 million hectares (80% of the target).

Their average yield is 18.3 centners per hectare, against 15.7 centners per hectare last year.

Soybeans were gathered from 600,000 hectares (53% of the target): 1.2 million tonnes of soybeans were harvested with the average yield being 19.7 centners per hectare (15.8 centners per hectare in 2010).

As of Oct. 3, 2011, farmers also harvested 7.4 million tonnes of sugar beets from 210,000 hectares (39% of the target).

The average yield was 349 centners per hectare against 300 centners per hectare in 2010.

First Vice Prime Minister for Economic Development and Trade Andriy Kliuyev earlier said that Ukraine will harvest 52-53 million tonnes of grain in 2011. According to Ukraine’s Agriculture Ministry, the country’s grain harvest this year should top 50-51 million tonnes compared to 39.3 million tonnes in 2010.
