You're reading: The new way for Ukrainian handball

A new President of Ukrainian handball federation was chosen April, 5 this year. Most delegates of Congress voted for Andrey Melnyk. He used to play for a national team of the country in the past. Now he is known as a successful businessman. Ukrainian handball family considers that Mr. Melnyk is able to raise prestige of Ukrainian handball to a new level.

We met each other after Men’s Euro-2016 qualification draw which took place in Warsaw.  Mr. Melnyk agreed to answer some questions.

Mr. Melnyk my first question is regarding results of Men’s Euro-2016 draw. Your team will face very strong opponents. Do you feel disappointed?

One side of my heart is disappointed. It is true. I think nobody wanted to play Hungary, Russia and Portugal.  Other side of my heart, however, is very happy. Because our fans can see one of the  best European teams. It is a big challenge for us. We will do all that depends on us to organize great handball events. Also, we hope that our men’s national team will be able to meet opponents worthily.

– What kind of aims do you set for Ukrainian team for the tournament?

Considering that our Men’s team has not been successful for many years, I would like to see how our guys will overcome qualification round. We have very interesting team now. I am sure we might play in Championship-2015. However we lost our dream. Meanwhile, life is going on. I would like to advise to forget this failure. They have to make right conclusions and go for the future victories.

– Where do you plan to play your home matches?

We want to broaden geography. We would like to unite our country. We plan to play three home matches in absolutely different parts of Ukraine, and we want to show Europe that we are similar. We are similar to each other in our country and we are similar to our European friends. We will consider opportunity to play in Uzhgorod against Hungary, in Kharkiv against Portugal, in Kyiv against Russia.

– Is there a threat of provocations? I mean your match with Russian team in Kyiv…

I would like to remind that sport is out of politics. Yes, there is a problem between our countries. However, I hope that this conflict will be managed soon. Besides, I suggest to appreciate this battle as a sport event only. I think you agree that a rivalry between Ukrainian and Russian handball teams is very interesting in itself. Do not forget that this match will be held in autumn. We have time to calm our emotions down and to show the great handball match.
