You're reading: Ukrainian prosecutor general demands Kyiv authorities, police bring order to Kyiv

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Vitaliy Yarema said that despite his appeal to Kyiv police and mayor's office to take immediate measures to bring order to the Ukrainian capital and resolving the issue of illegal seizure of administrative buildings, officials show criminal inaction.

“The situation in the capital center remains unchanged and, same as before, persons of unclear origin continue to be there. While hiding behind Maidan, they rob and commit disturbances, attacks and other crimes,” the Prosecutor General’s Office press office quoted Yarema as saying on July 18.

Moreover, significant deterioration of criminal situation is observed in central Kyiv, Yarema said.

“I am warning heads of the Kyiv municipal state administration and capital’s law enforcement authorities that if they do not carry out their professional duties, they will be held liable,” Yarema said. Order should be brought immediately in central Kyiv, he said.

On July 18, 2014 a resident of the Odessa region, who stayed in a tent at Maidan for a long time, approached a stage at the corner of Horodetsky Street and Khreschatyk and at this moment an unknown explosive device went off on him, as a result the citizen sustained fragment wounds to the head, torso and limbs and was sent to a hospital, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

A criminal case has been opened over the incident.

The delay in bringing order to central Kyiv could lead to tragic consequences, “as the device exploded in the very heart of Ukraine,” Yarema said.
