You're reading: Yefremov: Kyiv authorities could ban protests to prevent riots like in EU capitals

The Regions Party has stated that Kyiv's authorities have decided to protect administrative buildings from possible riots, similar to those that recently took place in some European capitals.

"I think that there should be neither fences nor special police detachments between the authorities and the people. This is absolutely impossible, and you can see that we demonstrated an absolutely different position – we come out to the people and hold a discussion," Leader of the Regions Party parliamentary faction Oleksandr Yefremov has said.

"Kyiv’s authorities are most likely concerned about events that took place in some European countries: we saw riots in Greece, we saw the situation in the United Kingdom, which was rather successful before these events, so to prevent such events they [Kyiv authorities] are taking the necessary measures to avoid such situations in our country," Yefremov said.

He added that if the actions of the Kyiv authorities contradict Ukrainian legislation, they can be appealed against via the appropriate legal procedures.
