LONDON (AP) — Official figures show that Rupert Murdoch's The Sun on Sunday newspaper has started strong, moving just over 3.2 million copies in its debut week.
Murdoch launched the paper’s Sunday edition on Feb. 26 to replace the now-defunct News of the World, which was forced to close last year amid a still-expanding scandal over the tabloid’s illegal practices.
The circulation figures published Friday by Britain’s Audit Bureau of Circulations are the first official indication of the tabloid’s success. The Sun’s figure is more than twice as strong as its closest competitor, the Sunday Mirror, and outpaces even the 2.7 million copies that the News of the World was moving when it was closed.
But media watchers say The Sun’s circulation will likely stabilize well below that mark.
