All actions by the government aimed at organizing transparent and democratic elections to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine are being met with resistance from the opposition, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said in an interview with Britain's Financial Times newspaper.
“We have to ensure there are free and democratic elections. The most
interesting thing is that everything we are doing to achieve that is
being met with resistance from our opposition. They say beforehand that
the elections will be rigged. I’m asking a simple question: ‘If you’re
against fraud, why don’t you support the installation of Web cameras at
polling stations?'” Azarov said.
The prime minister added that the installation of Web cameras would
help conduct online monitoring of how the election process is taking
place at each polling station.
Azarov said that according to Ukrainian electoral law,
representatives of opposition parties had been included in the
composition of election commissions and they have every opportunity to
monitor the fairness and transparency of elections and vote count.
He said that Ukraine had invited to the elections an unprecedentedly
large number of observers, from international organizations such as the
OSCE, the Council of Europe and the European Commission.
