You're reading: Azarov insisting on lowering gas prices

Ukraine is insisting that Russia should lower the price of its gas, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said at a meeting with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"I believe it is necessary to speed up the preparation of a new gas deal. Ukraine has been thoroughly and fully meeting its obligations on gas transit. However, the Ukrainian side would like to get guarantees of Russian gas supplies to Ukrainian industry," he said.

"As you know, the price of the gas supplied to Ukraine under the contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukrainy does not reflect the market value formed in the West, and greatly exceeds the cost of alternative fuels," the Ukrainian premier has said.

"Our main wish is to attain an economically reasonable and fair pricing formula," Azarov said.

He added that he hoped that Russian companies would take an active part in the modernization of the gas transportation system.
