You're reading: Baloha optimistic about United Centre participation in 2012 election to Ukrainian parliament

Ukraine's emergencies minister and one of the leaders of the United Centre Party, Viktor Baloha, believes that this political force has a good chance of winning seats in Ukraine's parliament in the 2012 elections.

"Now, that the parameters of the upcoming election campaign are clear, we in the United Center will be thinking about the form of our participation. I see the opportunities for the party itself (to win seats in parliament according to proportional representation system). We already have successful experience of participating in local elections, and our members are also well capable of fighting for seats in single mandate constituencies," he said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

According to him, the new law on parliamentary elections will be a step forward and will give an impetus to the renewal of the political elite of the country.

Baloha said the United Center party hasn’t changed its platform. The party supports the values of democracy, a liberal market economy and integration into the European Union.

"We’ve always supported reforms, which the country needs. At the same time, we don’t accept senseless babbling and political nihilism," he said.

The politician said he believes that the opposition parties won’t be able to unite their efforts at the elections and put forward united candidates for single mandate constituencies.

Baloha expressed the belief that the only proper foreign policy for Ukraine was its integration with the European Union and said he hoped that an agreement on association and free trade area with the EU would be signed.
