The former director of Ukraine's State Financial Inspectorate Mykola Hordiyenko has accused the government led by Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk of corruption.

“I have established that Hr 7.6 billion was lost because of corruption from 2012 to 2014. Of this amount, approximately Hr 3.5 billion was lost in the second half of 2014, when Yatsenyuk’s government was in power,” Hordiyenko said a joint session of the Ukrainian parliament’s committee on the fight against and the prevention of corruption, and the committee in charge of the legislative groundwork for law enforcement agencies.

These figures were uncovered during surprise financial inspections, he said.

“After my first public report, Mr Yatsenyuk ordered political reprisals against me and tarnished my honest name, and now they have warned [me] that they are opening a criminal case against me,” he said.

Hordiyenko asked for the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office, MPs and wider society to ensure an honest investigation into the corruption allegations.

“I am also asking you to protect me,” he added.
