You're reading: Klitschko insists on Yanukovych’s participation in talks

The talks on settling the political crisis in Ukraine between the authorities and the opposition must be attended by the president as the guarantor of the constitution and the person responsible for everything that takes place in the country, UDAR Party Leader Vitaliy Klitschko said.

The UDAR leader also expressed his surprise at National Security and Defense Council Secretary Andriy Kliuyev’s statement that he had pulled out of the negotiating process.

“How can you pull out of something you weren’t in? We said yesterday that negotiations must be held only with Yanukovych. But he is avoiding them and avoiding responsibility, and this is why he has placed it on the so-called working group,” Klitschko said.

He said he tried to meet with the president on Tuesday, but the latter was in a conference.

“Kliuyev, [presidential adviser Andriy] Portnov, and [Justice Minister Olena] Lukash came to me together to say that Yanukovych was in a conference. They promised he would call me. And now they are saying I’ve pulled out of the negotiating process. But I didn’t hold any talks with this group,” he said.
