The parliamentary majority plans to pass a law on the principles of state language policy by the end of the current session in July 2012, a co-author of the language bill, Regions Party MP Vadym Kolesnichenko, has said.

“The Verkhovna Rada, represented by the majority, wishes to adopt
this bill before summer vacation. According to the rules of procedure,
there are all opportunities for that,” he told reporter on Monday.

He also said that the bill would not be considered at the current plenary week.

“It was an erroneous statement, because if the concerns committee has
time to consider and prepare everything by Thursday, we would only
support this, but I think that technically we will have no time to
consider this issue,” Kolesnichenko said.

He said that work on the preparation of the bill for second reading
was being conducted by the committee on culture and spirituality, which
is headed by BYT-Batkivschyna faction deputy Volodymyr Yavorivsky.

Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn, in turn, said at a meeting
of the conciliatory council that 447 amendments had been introduced to
the bill. Lytvyn also said that MPs could submit their amendments by the
evening of June 19.

The current session of the Verkhovna Rada ends on Friday, July 6, after which the MPs leave for summer vacation.
