President of Poland Bronislaw Komorowski has said that a real solution to the situation with the imprisonment of former Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko has to be found and it [the situation] should not be used only for development of the EU-Ukraine relations.

"I think you should find a real and acceptable solution for this situation, and not only use these problems within the political context of relations between Ukraine and the EU," Komorowski said at a briefing following his meeting with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Kyiv on Monday.

The Polish president added that he would discuss the situation with Tymoshenko with opposition representatives at the Embassy of Poland in Ukraine in several hours.

He also said he wished that the Tymoshenko case had a minimal influence on the negotiations on the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement.

"I know that in many EU member-states and in many communities this case raises many emotions. There are important cases, but in addition there are top priority cases," the president of Poland said and added that Ukraine’s European integration is very important.

"At the same time, we realize that the Tymoshenko case is important and it should be tackled so as to form a respective evaluation of Ukraine in the EU, as these countries would initial the agreement on association and creation of a free trade area," he said.

The Polish president is sure that this is an issue that raises concern in relation to how this matter is perceived by the West. He also expressed hope that Article 365 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, under which Tymoshenko was convicted, would be decriminalized.
