You're reading: Party of Regions releases party list

The Party of Regions released its list of its candidates for the Oct. 28 parliamentary election. The list is an amalgamation of the current government, the Regions' faction in parliament, and a few odd characters with good fortunes or political careers behind their backs.

The party said it approved the list based on popularity polls in the
regions, and more popular members were given prominent places in the
list as a result. Speaking at the party congress on Jul 30, Prime
Minister Mykola Azarov, who also heads the Party of Regions, said
that his party has to win in a fair and democratic election.

“We
have returned hope, confidence and self-worth to people,” Azarov
said. “The country now has a strong economic foundation, on which
the new quality of life will be built.”

He
said his party is the first ever political force in independent
Ukraine, which started implementing complicated structural reform and
set long-term interests above its political ones.

Azarov
heads the list of psrty candidates. Pop singer Taisiya Povaliy,
Deputy Prime Minister Sergiy Tigipko, Chief of the National Security
Council Andriy Klyuev and faction head Oleksandr Yefremov form top
five of the list. Borys Kolesnikov, another deputy Prime Minister, is
running under number 8.

The
President’s son, Viktor Yanukovych, Jr., currently a deputy, landed
on the 22th spot of the list. Many officials from the
president’s administration, including its deputy head Iryna Akimova
and adviser Hanna Herman, will also run for parliament on the party
ticket, but not the president’s chief of staff Serhiy Lyovochkin.
None of the officials from the power group associated with him,
including Finance Minister Valeriy Khoroshkovskiy and Energy Minister
Yuriy Boiko, are present on the list.

Plenty
of other ministers were given prominent places, though. The
controversial Education Minister Dmytro Tabachnyk will run under
number 11, Justice Minister Oleksandr Lavrynovych – right after
him.

Yuriy
Ivaniuschenko, who is considered to be close to the president, and is
often referred to as a member of the presidential “Family” is
number 24 on the list, while the young billionaire Vasyl Khmelnytskiy
is number 37.

Half
of the 450-seat parliament will be elected through proportional
system. The Party of Regions has the strongest support among
Ukrainians at the moment, with 28 percent of support, according to
the June poll of Democratic Initiatives Foundation think tank.
