You're reading: Prosecutor claims no politics in Tymoshenko’s case

The criminal case against Ukrainian former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko on the conclusion of gas contracts with Russia in 2009 doesn't involve politics, but is a simple abuse of office, state prosecutor Lilia Frolova said.

"The prosecution has every reason to believe and is convinced that the sentence pronounced by Pechersky District Court is legitimate and justified. It is an absolutely common criminal case, namely the case on the abuse of office," the prosecutor said on Channel 5 on Tuesday evening.

"I would not want to go into any politicizing, which is stirred around the case by all the parties to the litigation, in particular by the defense team and political parties. This is a typical criminal case," Frolova said.

As reported, on Oct. 11, Pechersky District Court sentenced Tymoshenko to seven years in prison for exceeding her powers when signing gas contracts with Russia in 2009.

Tymoshenko is also part of other criminal inquiries, in particular, into the activities of the United Energy Systems of Ukraine (UESU).
