It would be unreasonable to decriminalize a certain article of the Ukrainian Penal Code for political reasons, in particular, in relation to the verdict issued to ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Viktor Pshonka said.

"It is a serious approach, and deciding such things for some isolated political case is not very correct," he told journalists on Thursday.

He would not comment on the possible actions of the state prosecution in the event of the decriminalization of Article 365 of the Penal Code, under which Tymoshenko was convicted.

"It is an altogether different legal field. If it is [decriminalized], then we shall talk about it. Today the law – Article 365 – is effective, there is responsibility," Pshonka said.

If the issue is discussed, "it will be possible to take some measures," he said.

The parliament has raised the issue of decriminalization three times over the past decade, but with no result, the prosecutor general also recalled.
