You're reading: Tomenko: Ukrainian authorities underestimating mood of protest in society

Verkhovna Rada Deputy Chairman Mykola Tomenko has said that none of the political parties were involved in organizing a protest by Afghan war veterans and Chornobyl cleanup workers outside the building of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, on September 20.

"Now I’m reading a lot of interesting statements by the authorities about who organized the protest. Maybe someone from the opposition would be pleased to say that it was the opposition that organized the protest, but I, as a person who is slightly familiar with the situation with Afghan war veterans and as a participant in the fighting in Afghanistan, must tell you that the political parties have nothing to do with yesterday’s protests. They were organized by Afghan organizations and Chornobyl cleanup workers," Tomenko said at a briefing on Wednesday.

"If the authorities think that someone is trying to do this for a certain purpose, they are underestimating the current mood of protest in Ukrainian society," he said.
