Ukraine wants Russia and the European Union to make it clear whether the Ukrainian gas transport system will be used further to transport natural gas from Russia to Europe across Ukrainian territory, the spokesman for Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, Vitaliy Lukyanenko, has said.

"Since Russia is building gas pipelines bypassing Ukraine, Ukraine wants to get a clear answer, whether Russia intends further to use the Ukrainian gas transport system … And from Europe, Ukraine wants to know about its plans regarding the Ukrainian gas transportation route," Lukyanenko told journalists, voicing the Ukrainian prime minister’s position in connection with the launch of the Nord Stream gas pipeline by Russia.

According to him, if Russia does not intend to use the Ukrainian gas system, its maintenance will be unprofitable for Ukraine and it will have either to dismantle it or use it for other purposes, he said.
