The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) suspects its former chief, Oleksandr Yakymenko, of financing terrorism and delivering arms to the country's eastern regions, SBU chief investigator Vasyl Vovk said on April 9.

“There is suspicion that the former head of the SBU, Yakymenko,
financed terrorism and provided material aid to terrorists, specifically
weapons. This delivery was organized by Yakymenko,” Vovk said.

Vovk referred to information that hundreds of automatic weapons,
thousands of bullets and grenades were delivered in a region near the
Sea of Azov in May 2014.

Vovk said the supply was organized personally by Yakymenko. “We also
found that this person has provided his personal funds to terrorist
organizations. It happened in Rostov-on-Don, Moscow and St. Petersburg,”
he said, adding that these facts are stated in the criminal case
materials and the money amounts to “thousands of dollars in cash.”

Besides liability for supporting terrorist organizations, Yakymenko
will bear liability for financing bandit groups and militant groups,
Vovk said.
