You're reading: Yanukovych : CIS’s potential not realized yet

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he supports the position of Turkmenistan concerning the need for active work by the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), according to the president's press service.

During a private meeting with President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow the Ukrainian president said, "the CIS platforms allows us to resolve many serious issues, and we have something to discuss today, and in particular, this issue."

According to Yanukovych, the CIS has not realized its potential completely yet.

The Ukrainian head of state added that during his visit the dialogue between Ukraine and Turkmenistan has to be directed at activating bilateral relations "using the potential we have to improve the economy, the humanitarian sphere, the fuel and energy complex, and education."

"Today is the time for us to give incentives to the economies of our states," he said, and added that the integration of Ukraine and Turkmenistan into the world economy was very important.

Yanukovych also praised the development of relations between Turkmenistan and China. He stressed that Ukraine was also developing its relations with China.

The Ukrainian president invited his counterpart to visit Ukraine, The president of Turkmenistan, in turn, said that during the talks the sides should pay attention to current joint projects, and future plans.

"Our people relate to the Ukrainian people in a very [friendly way]," he said.

Turkmenistan will chair the CIS in 2012.
